Artist's Statement

My work in hand painted silk spans twenty years. Painting on silk has allowed me to explore possibilities with an unpredictable outcome, much like life itself; it serves my intuitive creative process.

Colour is one of the most important aspects of my work. The ability to change the colour of cloth, particularly silk, excites me. Contrasting elements dominate my work; the organic versus geometric, found object versus the inspired, and the element of contrasting colour.

Currently, I have been exploring cloth manipulation using the traditional technique of smocking. By shaping my resist dyed cloth the work has another dimension.

Biography

I have spent a large portion of my life devoted to textiles and attribute my mother for that influence. Our mother sewed everything for us so fabric was very accessible in our home. The traditional methods of sewing and needlework which my mother had taught me, at a young age; I still use and enjoy today.

After attending Sheridan School of Design for a year and a half, I completed my arts education at the Ontario College of Art majoring in Textile Design. I graduated in 1986 and continued my studies in Textile Sciences at the University of Guelph.

While at O.C.A., I was introduced to silk painting and was intrigued with the ability to produce and control colour on fabric, particularly silk. For more than 20 years I developed my own silk painting techniques. Under the company name of Angles, I designed scarves for the retail and the wholesale market, as well as, custom designs for corporate clients. My scarves were carried by shops across Canada and the U.S. and my silk painting has won several awards. Although I no longer pursue the production end of the craft, I still continue to explore the technique, developing one-of-a-kind pieces of textile art.

After many years of manipulating colour and pattern using the silk painting technique, my current work exhibits an innovative textural quality through manipulation, smocking. It was a natural transition to alter the cloth's surface.

studio

My studio is an old wood detached garage which my husband and I renovated when we first bought our home.

The front door and window were salvaged from the discarded remnants of the South Simcoe Railway, which is our neighbour to the west. The inside is bright and cheerful and easy to adapt to my many projects.
